And The Oscar Goes To…

I LOVE going to the movies! I try to go at least a couple of times per month as it’s the one outing I can still afford on my meager budget and I have always been one for entertainment and escapism! So, I thought it would be fun to blog about my Oscar predictions for The 82nd Annual Academy Awards which air tonight on CTV at 8:30 pm.

I’ll make my predictions for each category and then beside them in brackets I’ll tell you who I would like to win! If I don’t include an entry in brackets, it’s because I’m totally on board with the first choice. I once won an Oscar pool when I worked at Goodmans LLP in Toronto as a legal assistant. Actually, I tied for the winning place with entertainment lawyer David Zitzerman and we split the pot. It was a great day indeed!

I don’t know why the Academy decided to honour 10 films this year in the Best Picture category but they have. I hope they don’t make a habit of it.

So with no further adieu, here are my predictions for tonight’s winners even though I haven’t seen all of the nominated films:

1. Writing (Original Screenplay)

The Hurt Locker written by Mark Boal
(Up – Screenplay by Bob Peterson, Pete Docter. Story by Pete Docter, Bob Peterson, Tom McCarthy)

2. Writing (Adapted Screenplay)

District 9 written by Neill Blomkamp and Terri Tatchell
(An Education – Screenplay by Nick Hornby)

Crazy Heart – The Weary Kind (Theme from Crazy Heart) – Music and Lyric by Ryan Bingham and T Bone Burnett

11. Foreign Language Film

A Prophet (Un Prophéte) – France – Directed by Jacques Audiard

21. Actress In A Leading Role

Sandra Bullock – The Blind Side
(Helen Mirren – The Last Station)

22. Actor In A Supporting Role

Christoph Waltz – Inglorious Basterds

23. Actor In A Leading Role

Jeff Bridges – Crazy Heart
(I will be happy if Jeff wins, but I’ll be equally happy, if not more, if Colin Firth wins for A Single Man.)

24. Best Picture

The Hurt Locker – Kathryn Bigelow, Mark Boal, Nicolas Chartier and Greg Shapiro
(I haven’t seen this movie but the buzz for it is very strong. I have seen Inglorious Basterds, Up, Up In The Air, and Avatar and I think it will be a tight race against Avatar. However, my personal choice for Best Picture of 2009 is A Single Man.)
