Hello! Are you a teacher, or do you have children in grades 4 – 8 ?
Join the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and “Canada’s ambassadors of musical diversity”, JUNO-nominated Sultans of String, for a Student concert of music written in the styles of numerous global traditions. There is a long history of composers being influenced by other cultures. In the past, composers would travel to various regions of the world to soak up the local tradition and write in that region’s style. Many of the gems of classical orchestral repertoire can be considered “world music”!
As our world grows smaller, and as our city of Toronto becomes more and more multicultural, Canadian composers Chris McKhool and Kevin Laliberté of Sultans of String do not have to go very far to create a “global sonic tapestry”. Students will enjoy a programme of “world music” for orchestra and the musical fusion of styles influencing composers today.
PROGRAMME TO INCLUDE EXCERPTS FROM COMPOSERS:
Bizet, Mussorgsky/Ravel, Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, Khachaturian,
Plus selections from Sultans of String including Palmas, Road to Kfarmishki, and Emerald Swing. (Programme subject to change)
ALL CONCERTS TAKE PLACE IN ROY THOMSON HALL from Monday, April 22 – Friday, April 26, 2013
