Live Wire Music Series Kingston is wrapping up this year’s season with a concert at The Octave Theatre on Saturday, March 29 featuring the spectacular Cuban-Canadian guitarist and singer Alex Cuba and his new band. Alex sings in both Spanish and English and has won two Juno Awards for World Music Album of the Year in 2006 for Humo De Tabaco, and in 2008 for his second album, Agua Del Pozo. In 2010 he won the Latin Grammy Award for Best New Artist. On his newest album Ruido En El Sistema he continues his exploration of rock, soul, pop and Latin funk, and solidifies his stature as one of North America’s most critically acclaimed musicians.
Alex’s first stage appearance on national TV was age of four, playing claves in a group directed by his father. Alex went on to study guitar, tres, percussion and bass. He was born in Artemisa, Cuba (1 hour west of Havana) and now lives in Smithers, B.C. (14 hours north of Vancouver). Musically, he lives everywhere in between. His trademark sugarcane-sweet melodies, pop-soul hooks and rock chords subtly subvert commonly held notions of what Cuban music is. With his vintage Gibson electric guitar and forgoing conventional stereotypes that typify much of the Latin music landscape, Alex is defining his own “Latin Soul” genre and crafting brilliant songs that cut through linguistic and cultural barriers.
