ISRAELI-PALESTINIAN CONFLICT BROUGHT TO LIFE FOR MIDDLE GRADERS: Striking Terror by Denis Lipman

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ISRAELI-PALESTINIAN CONFLICT BROUGHT TO LIFE FOR MIDDLE GRADERS
Striking Terror by Denis Lipman to be released Oct. 2016

Striking Terror by Denis Lipman

Piscataqua Press has announced the upcoming release of Striking Terror, a thriller by Denis Lipman that will, for the first time, bring the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to life for middle grade readers in an accessible, entertaining way. “We’re very excited about Striking Terror,” says Piscataqua Press publisher Tom Holbrook. “We haven’t seen anything like this for middle graders and teens—a fun, real-life thriller using a real-world conflict as a backdrop.”

Author Denis Lipman says this is what drove him to write Striking Terror. “When I was a kid, I loved reading about spies, detectives and mercenaries. When I looked for a contemporary thriller to share with my daughter, I couldn’t find any. So I wrote one that hooks into one of today’s important issues—it just took longer than I’d expected, as I wanted to research everything thoroughly.” Creating a hero who uses his magic skills to get out of trouble was an added bonus, the former magician says with a smile. “Think Harry Houdini, not Harry Potter,” he hastens to add. “I’ve been thinking for years about a boy who will use tricks to get out of scrapes.”

Striking Terror is the fictional story of Micah, a Jewish teen sent by his parents to stay with relatives in Israel. While settling down to a new life in Jerusalem, the amateur magician befriends a troupe of performers—and a Palestinian girl, Shireen, who is training to blow up the bus he rides to school. When Shireen chooses to abort the attack, her handlers turn on her and the two teens must run for their lives. Using every trick he knows to stay alive, Micah helps Shireen escape the alleyways of old Jerusalem into the Negev Desert. Here in a remote farmhouse, Micah and his friends have only illusion, luck and courage to fight a well-armed and murderous enemy. Then, beyond the desert, Micah and Shireen are pulled into a plot that will rip the peace process apart.

Before emigrating to the U.S. from his native England, author Denis Lipman was a professional magician for several years. His first book, A Yank Back to England (GemmaMedia 2010), is a travel memoir now in its third printing. Before moving to New England, Lipman and his wife Frances
Erlebacher ran a small advertising company in the Washington, DC area for more than 20 years, where he was also active in theater.

Piscataqua Press is a small, independent publisher that focuses on New England authors.

Waiting For John / An Ode To The Century Past / Imagine by Boris Glikman

The Dakota NYCWell, I finally made it to the city that never sleeps.  Of course the very first place I go to is The Dakota. I spent so many years reading about it, picturing it in my mind, dreaming about visiting it and now I am actually standing right outside its famous wrought-iron gates!

It is October the 9th, 2009. I have specifically timed my very first visit to New York City to coincide with his birthday. Surely he must come out and acknowledge his fans on a day like this, accept their greetings, perhaps even blow out the candles on the cakes some of his admirers will undoubtedly bring along.

Within five minutes of arriving at The Dakota—and what a thrill it is to see it for the very first time—Yoko walks right past me. Strangely, she carries no presents in her hands and looks rather melancholy on this joyous occasion. No, not just melancholy, more than that, she looks completely disconsolate and deflated, shrunken almost, as if some vital part of her has been amputated. But surely, once she walks into their apartment on the 9th floor, his famous wit will cheer her up and his cheeky smile will make her smile, too.

Meantime, I will stand here and wait for him to come out. I have flown across oceans to see him and see him I definitely will, despite those ugly rumours I overheard some time ago about something horrifying that apparently befell him a while back. What nonsense! Crazy things like that just don’t take place in our world. Surely fate would take extra-special care of such a man to ensure nothing bad happened to the creator of such sublime and immortal beauty. Why, I am certain he is half-lying, half-sitting on his bed right now, as I’ve seen him do in photos, picking notes on his guitar and creating more sonic jewels of ineffable wonder.

And so I will stand here and wait for him to come out, till nightfall if necessary, for I have to prove to myself that he is in fact a real person and not just an idealised construct created by mankind to satisfy its insatiable need for heroes. For it is almost impossible to believe so many timeless masterpieces could inexhaustibly flow out of one man. What if he is just an archetypal symbol of our hopes, our dreams, our aspirations for a utopian existence and so all my waiting is in vain? But no, that can’t be!

And so I will stand here and wait for him to come out, till nightfall if necessary, to wish him a happy birthday and to press into his hands some of my own poems and stories, so that he can see for himself that we both share the same ideals and beliefs.

And I will grab the opportunity to tell him how much his music has meant to me over the years, how his music gave me the inspiration and the courage to reach for peaks in my own creative endeavours, how music for me is the loftiest form of art and the most sublime means of expression. Alas, not being gifted with having celestial sounds divine arising and frolicking in my mind, I instead am constrained to convey my inner being through lame, unwieldy, coarse lumps of words.

I will let him know how I have tried to continue his mission of spreading hope and light around the world through my own writings, my own actions, my own conduct and interactions with people, for even one small candle can destroy the infinite darkness of the entire night.

Until then, I will wait, for I know if I wait long enough, he will come. He just has to come, for New York City is the place where everything is achievable, the place where impossible, ineffable dreams come true. And so if I just close my eyes and wish hard enough, surely he must appear!

“Waiting for John” comes from a series of pieces written by Boris Glikman titled “Impressions of America” after he visited the USA. This series takes a surreal and unusual look at America. Read more about Boris’ adventures here.

AN ODE TO THE CENTURY PAST

That was the age of despair, disrepair
of the damned and the condemned
but this is now, the New Utopia.

That was the time when we killed off our muses,
throwing their remains to the ravenous dogs;
our innocence disembowelled,
our hopes quartered
with five hollow-point bullets
on that cold December night.

When six million replaced six-six-six
as the accursed number of all eternity and
six million nameless faces,
six million faceless names
were extinguished for that greatest crime of all –
Existence.

But this is now, the Neo-Utopia.

That was the age of despair, disrepair
when raven-black sun
threw rays of shadow upon the Earth
and giant bullfrogs ate pygmy antelope
bones, hooves and all.

But still we fought on, hoping for meaning to appear.
Yet when it arrived, it was only in our dreams,
dissipating the moment we awoke
and grabbed at its gossamer threads
with our crude, clumsy hands.

And this is now, the Last Utopia.

Imagine by Michael Cheval

“Imagine” by Michael Cheval

Imagine

When the city that never sleeps finally retires to bed, exhausted by its own exuberance and hyperactivity, then and only then does John appear at the memorial dedicated to him in Central Park.

Betrayed and forsaken by God, Fate and Mankind on that cold December night, John now performs for no one but himself, singing softly the sonic jewels of wonder he has composed posthumously, and still believing, despite everything that had happened, love is all you need.

He wears a hat made out of a mincer which is filled not with dead meat but with living strawberries, his favourite fruit, and his piano is a zebra-girl hybrid who died young, at the very same instant John passed into eternity.

If all this seems to be quite bizarre and beyond belief, one must remember this is New York City after all, a place where impossible and ineffable dreams do come true, if only one imagines them hard enough.

MADE FROM SCRATCH becomes a book with buzz.

MADE FROM SCRATCH: The Ultimate Guide To Self-Publishing by Jaime D. Buckley

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

October 30, 2014 – Santaquin, UT — Jaime Buckley, Author of Chronicles of a Hero is known as a champion of the underdog. Believing each person has inherent value, he helps the world laugh at themselves, use each experience as an advantage, then encourages others to get up and try again. This same focus has turned him from youth and their parents towards bloggers and writers of all skill levels. Jaime’s alter ego Wendell P. Dipmier, the main character of his fantasy series, takes a back seat this time as the author expands his reach to the business minded.

MADE FROM SCRATCH: The Ultimate Guide To Self-Publishing became an obsession to help Indie Authors do the seemingly impossible—publish a professional product on a shoestring budget. No stranger to extreme hardships, Jaime shares his decade of experience and working against the odds, including homelessness, lack of funding and dealing with a cynical market to point out advantages many authors miss. His 21 books and prolific writing habits make him a unique role model for new authors seeking a non-traditional path. The book takes readers from idea to promotion and beyond.

“This idea started when I made some new friends at Be A Better Blogger,” remarked the author in a recent interview. “I met powerful, unique personalities—but few of them had ever published their work. With so much to offer others, I saw the opportunity to give that brilliant community a huge boost in the right direction. Sharing some personal experiences and pointing out a path most people could follow has become a specialty of mine. MADE FROM SCRATCH was written for bloggers, but it applies to writers in general.”

Move Over, Vamps and Shapeshifters! Get Ready for Elementals! by Elaine Calloway

Water's Blood by Elaine Calloway

BOOK PREVIEW

Move Over, Vamps and Shapeshifters! Get Ready for Elementals!

By Elaine Calloway

The supernatural has long been a fascination of humankind. Spooky things, creatures that go bump in the night, spells that turn evil people into toads, etc. These tales have been the delicious material of campfires and slumber parties.

Even as a child, my favorite cartoon was Scooby-Doo, which always had some form of ghost story at its center. It seemed only fitting that I would grow up, longing to tell similar anecdotes. And while I do have a few ghost stories in the works, I decided to take the plunge into Indie Publishing with my 4-book Elemental Clan Series. (The jury is still out on whether this decision was blind ambition or temporary insanity, though the experience has been incredible!)

Water’s Blood, available now on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Smashwords, is the first book in the series and features Brooke, a Water Elemental stationed in New Orleans. The Crescent City was an ideal setting for a book featuring a Water-related character, since New Orleans is surrounded by water on all sides! I grew up there and enjoyed using my favorite areas as backdrops to the plot. The city has many tourist places, and I liked adding in a few secret spots that don’t make the top of the tourism circuit. To read more about this particular book, including the music soundtrack which I created to help inspire the characters, go to the Water’s Blood page on Elaine’s Web site.

Book Blurb:

After breaking the rules to mate with a human, Water Elemental Brooke is forbidden to share a life with Alex and their half-breed daughter, Ella. Yet local Fallen Angel clans are determined to snare Ella for themselves. Brooke broke the rules once by allowing love to interfere with her Elemental duties. Now she and Alex must put consequences aside again—if they wish to save their daughter’s soul.

Leaping into Indie Publishing has been quite a learning experience, but I’ve loved having control over my cover art, my publishing schedule, and more. Very worthwhile decision! Another writer once said, “It’s a learning process.” She couldn’t have said it better. That is exactly what it is, but very worthwhile.

Thanks so much for having me on the blog today! Any questions or comments are welcome!

Questions from Christine Bode of Scully Love Promo:

Hi Elaine! I just ordered this book from Amazon.com and can’t wait to read it! My first question is when you wrote your main characters Brooke & Alex, did you write them with famous actors in mind and if so, who were those actors?

Elaine: As far as actors/people in mind for Brooke and Alex, yes, absolutely. If I don’t have some kind of visual in my head when I write (be it Hollywood star, old acquaintance, etc.) then the writing doesn’t go as well.

Alex was Kevin McKidd, who has been in a few films but was probably most well known for Grey’s Anatomy in the later seasons. Brooke was Rosario Dawson. Ella was Melonie Diaz.

Bad guys – Soren = Sam Elliott; Cristos = Paul Bettany

There is a Pinterest board I have for WATER’S BLOOD if you want to see pics of all my visual inspiration  And I have one for Book Two as well.

Christine: Have you written the second installment of The Elemental Clan series yet?

Elaine: Yes, Book Two of the Elemental Series, RAGING FIRE, is scheduled to be released on 8/1. Am just going through and inputting final beta reader comments now. You can see the cover on its page on my site here:

A Word from the Author:

I happen to be a big fan of the Highlander series since it first came out. I simply loved Adrian Paul in his role of tortured hero fighting for justice and survival. Who can resist a character like that? 🙂

So one day, I started thinking that there are some amazing series out there in the paranormal/fantasy romance genre, but I couldn’t think of a specific one featuring immortals that live under a legal and political system they formed over time. Immortals with their own style of government and their own code of ethics. Basically, a secret society of these special individuals that aims at furthering the interests of its people and the humans they live with. Of course, as with each government, there is opposition—some justified, and some not so much.

Another thought I had was: what if Man had someone—or something—powerful and magical to come to the rescue at certain crucial points in history? Some things could have happened differently—or turned out much worse. And what if Man’s fate and future is determined by warring factions of these immortal beings? The germ of this idea started in my mind, and together with my interest in myth and adventure, the Valthreans were born.

The story and practices of the Valthreans constitute the backdrop of each book in the series, the glue that holds them together. Some pretty amazing characters make up the higher ranks of this unusual organization—sexy heroes and kickass, determined heroines—and my goal is to tell you their stories and happy endings :).

“Most authors dream of writing a best seller, appearing on a celebrity TV show and touring the country from coast to coast.  But where they fall short is having a real understanding of the business of being a successful author, and investing the time to write a solid business plan for promoting and marketing their book(s),” explains Deenah, PR and Marketing for Lotus Moon Press.

One of the goals of PublishandPromote.ca is to ensure that new and aspiring authors also avoid costly mistakes, such as targeting their audience inappropriately, sending out an inconsistent image and message, not creating professional sales tools or media kits, and poor planning of publicity and marketing campaigns.

Queen Vernita Meets Sir Heathybean The Astronomer by Dawn Menge and Heath Rhoades

Book Review
Title: Queen Vernita Meets Sir Heathybean The Astronomer
Authors: Dawn Menge and Heath Rhoades
Illustrator: Bobbi Switzer
Publisher: Outskirts Press, Inc.
Released: 2010
Pages: 34
ISBN-10: 1432731203
ISBN-13: 978-1432731205
Stars: 3.5

Queen Vernita Meets Sir Heathybean The Astronomer is the third installment in the engaging and intelligent Queen Vernita series written by Dawn Menge. With this book, she has a co-author: Heath Rhoades, an Astronomy Team Leader at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s Table Mountain Observatory. He is obviously the inspiration for the character of Sir Heathybean and as always, the book is delightfully illustrated by Bobbi Switzer, but this time the illustrations are somewhat juvenile for the text.

This volume is a little different from the first two, which include the award winning Queen Vernita’s Visitors and Queen Vernita Visits The Blue Ice Mountains, in that the size of the book has changed from 8.2 x 8.2 to 8.5 x 11 and the reading age level has switched from ages 4-8 to 9-12 in this latest book. I must confess that I didn’t read the book ahead of time when I read it to my niece and nephew who are 8-years-old because I expected it to be more like its predecessors and I did feel a bit awkward. My niece enjoyed the photos as well as the story, asked some questions about a couple of astronomy facts (that thankfully I was able to answer), and was especially interested in how fast the Earth rotates around the other planets and the reason why each year has 365 days. My nephew seemed more interested in playing with his re-discovered Tamagotchi.

However, this is still the quality children’s book that I’ve come to expect from Dawn Menge, and it was filled with so many interesting facts about the solar system, planets, asteroids and comets, that I learned things too. The average parent will as well I suspect, because not many can claim to be experts in astronomy!

Queen Vernita Meets Sir Heathybean The Astronomer is written in the same style as the previous books, with Queen Vernita of the Land of Oceaneers inviting 12 different friends to visit her for one month during each month of the year. Each day of the week they learn a new fact and this time, they were all treated to astronomy lessons from Sir Heathybean The Astronomer and Cora the Teacher. The authors have included some Greek and Roman mythology in their descriptions of the solar system as well as a lot of numerical facts including temperatures in Fahrenheit which can be a mouthful when reading aloud.

Queen Vernita’s visitors are people of all ages from many different ethnicities and include a child with cerebral palsy and one with Down’s syndrome to establish the concept of lack of prejudice and that anyone can enjoy learning new things. At the end of Queen Vernita Meets Sir Heathybean The Astronomer, Menge (who is currently working on her PhD in Curriculum and Instruction) reveals that the next book in the series will be about the sea and plant life of the Oceaneer islands. I’m probably looking forward to that as much as my niece and nephew are!

SILVER WINNER IN THE MOM’S CHOICE AWARDS

Children’s author Dawn Menge is a smart woman. She has a Masters Degree and Clear Credential in Special Education and is currently working towards her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction.

Through her character Queen Vernita (who now officially has a series of adventures in print!), she has created an absolutely wonderful storybook teacher for young children (ages 5-9) that is once again spectacularly illustrated by the very talented Bobbi Switzer. One of the reasons I love the Queen Vernita series so much is because of the bright, bold colours that are used in the pictures, and the other is that the stories are so fun and intelligent.

Every year Queen Vernita of Oceaneer (first introduced in Queen Vernita’s Visitors) writes to twelve of her closest friends and invites them to come to visit her. In this installment, the Queen has requested that her friends go with her to see the Blue Ice Mountains in the Land of Quails. Each month of the year she takes a different friend and together, on each day of the week, they experience the fun of adventure and education. Queen Vernita’s January visitor, Debbie, learns all about crabs! In March, Queen Vernita and her friend Christopher take a boat to see some tidewater glaciers and learn all about them. August weather encourages the Queen and her friend Marcella to visit the temperate rainforest of the Blue Ice Mountains where they meet park ranger Larry who tells them all about the flora and fauna of the region. In September, Vernita and Virginia discover the wonders of the Aurora Borealis and in November, Vernita and Dylan go snorkeling in the freezing glacier water and uncover the mysteries of underwater life.

Every day of the week Queen Vernita does something different with her friend who is visiting her that month and she shares so much joy with them that I find myself being envious and wishing I had a friend like Queen Vernita myself. Or better yet, perhaps I could become Queen Christine and create a similar environment for my own friends to enjoy! However, I must say that I would be very tired of having company for a whole year, no matter how much I enjoy the camaraderie of friendship!

Queen Vernita Visits the Blue Ice Mountains is another splendid children’s book by Dawn Menge and I hope that her audience continues to grow because the premise of this series is truly enjoyable and shouldn’t be overlooked. Parents and teachers everywhere will love teaching the monthly calendar, days of the week, and the changing seasons through the exciting activities of Queen Vernita and her visitors.
