Flamenco Guitarist Holly Blazina Introduces Debut Album Transcendencia on October 13, 2017

Holly Blazina Flamenco Guitarist

September 13, 2017

Calgary, AB flamenco guitarist, Holly Blazina will release her debut independent album, Transcendencia on October 13, 2017 through iTunes and Spotify.  Her CD release concert will be held at Decidedly Jazz Danceworks in Calgary on October 13 at 8:00 pm and tickets can be purchased online here. The album features nine compositions drawn from years of emersion, study, and collaboration in the flamenco music scene, both in Spain and Canada. Transcendencia was produced by Montreal-based performer, composer, and musical director, Amir Amiriand boasts accomplished players from the Canadian flamenco and world music scenes, bringing in modern elements not traditionally found in the genre, such as saxophone, violin, piano, and santur. The pieces were also workshopped with acclaimed flamenco guitarists, Paco Fernandez of Seville and San Fransisco’s, Ricardo Diaz.

The compositions on Transcendencia span a number of years from the time Blazina began writing in 2005, and parallels her experience in studying flamenco. “I decided it was time to truly actualize myself as an artist, which meant going beyond myself and living large. Recording these pieces was the most important step I could take in that direction,” Blazina explains. The arrangements explore the full expressive capacity of the nylon-stringed guitar, and for Blazina, cultivate a resilience that is both physically and emotionally demanding. She has refined ways of making the instrument truly speak, and claims space as an accomplished female player in a traditionally male-dominated genre.

ABOUT HOLLY BLAZINA Holly Blazina regularly performs as a soloist, in traditional Flamenco ensembles, as well as with other musicians from the jazz, classical and world music genres, delighting and inspiring audiences wherever she plays. She has performed as part of the Calgary International Flamenco Festival, and participates as an instructor and performer each year at Calgary’s Classical Guitarfest West. Holly has had the good fortune of studying intensively with renowned artists both in Spain and North America.

Multiple Grammy Award-Winning Producer Javier Limón Collaborates with Canadian Singer Amanda Martinez

The Royal Conservatory is proud to announce an exciting addition to the December 1 concert by Canadian-Latin singer-songwriter Amanda Martinez: Martinez will collaborate with multiple Grammy Award-winning Spanish producer Javier Limón on her concert, which will mark Limón’s Canadian debut, as well as on her next album, scheduled for release in spring 2013.

“It is a dream come true to be working with Javier. I have a lot of admiration for his work,” says Martinez.

Producer, musician, and composer, the young Javier Limón is a seven-time Latin Grammy Award winner, Artistic Director of Berklee College of Music’s Mediterranean Music Institute in Valencia, and 2012 artist-in-residence at Berklee in Boston. He graduated from the Madrid Royal Conservatory, where he studied piano and guitar. He is an active composer and producer who began composing for flamenco artists but has since expanded his reach to Latin jazz musicians and Cuban artists. Recording from Bogota to Paris and New York to Palestine, Limón incorporates a decidedly international vibe in his take on the traditions of Flamenco. His many composition and production credits include major albums by renowned artists such as Paco de Lucía, Bebo Valdes, Diego El Cigala, Enrique Morente, Wynton Marsalis, Anoushka Shankar, Yasmin Levy, and the acclaimed Spanish singer Buika (who will be performing in Koerner Hall on January 25).

Canadian-Mexican singer Amanda Martinez’s music converges at the intersection of vibrant Afro-Cuban beats, sensual flamenco rhythms, and colourful Mexican folk music. Following performances at the opening ceremonies of the 2011 Pan American Festival in Mexico and the 2010 FIFA World Cup in her mother’s homeland of South Africa, as well as the Montreal Jazz Festival and New York’s iconic Blue Note club, Martinez is steadily garnering international acclaim. Her albums Amor and Sola have garnered numerous accolades including rising to No. 1 on the iTunes World Music charts. She captured the Emerging Artist Award from FACTOR in 2012 and was featured on Putumayo’s album Bossa Nova Around the World, and was also featured on Juno Award-winning guitarist Jesse Cook’s album Frontiers and invited to tour as his special guest from New York City to Dubai.

Amanda Martinez with special guest Javier Limón is supported by World MasterCard®, CBC, and NOW.

Amanda Martinez is pleased to support the life-saving work of www.soschildrensvillages.ca with abandoned and orphaned children around the world.

Spreading the power of music through guitars is Esteban’s life.

Guitarist Esteban (Stephen Paul) began playing his favourite instrument at a very young age. Having graduated from Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Mellon University, the talented musician moved to Spain to take master classes with Andrés Segovia, known as the father of the modern classical guitar movement, returning to the U.S. in 1978. Unfortunately, due to a car accident, Esteban, nicknamed by his teacher and mentor, was unable to play guitar for a decade.

Starting all over again during the 1990s, Esteban became a chart-topper after independently releasing By Request and Flame Flamenco & Romance. Dozens of albums followed, and in time Esteban developed a guitar teaching program that he marketed largely through television and video, along with his own American Legacy guitar line, which he features prominently in the videos.

“Best of Esteban” appeared on CD in 2006.
“Ring of Fire”, a tribute to Johnny Cash, released in 2010.

Discover Esteban’s stunning and disciplined style of flamenco that is heavily influenced by atmospheric new age music and Latin pop.
