Toronto, Canada.  Montreal’s pop band, BRIDGEWAY, continue to enjoy their music journey and contribution to the creativity of their city. Touted as “the next Quebec sensation” (Roberto Ciurleo, Virgin Radio France), Bridgeway are making strides at national radio with the release of their new single, “Liberty” (CANCON) from their debut full-length album WHATCHA WANT FROM ME (January 2016). The immensely talented four-man high-energy delivering band, consists of Raph Pilon (vocals, keyboards), Vince Vertefeuille (guitars), Phil Chevrier (bass) and Chris Carignan (drums).

Recorded at multi award-winning Armoury Studios (Vancouver) under the direction of co-producers Tommy Mac (Hedley) and Luc Tellier (David Usher, Marie-Mai, The New Cities), “Liberty” written by Raph Pilon, is an honest rite of passage about viewing the world from a different place and space, something all of us, especially the young, can’t wait to do. Supported at radio with tracking and promotions by Linda Dawe of Music Solutions, the edgy pop vibe and compelling lyrics are captured in a fresh, captivating video. Filmed in Quebec and under the direction of Cat Around Films (Epitaph Records, Mediaskare, Artery Foundation), the visual inclusion of hilltops and river carved valleys is a visual treat.

Performing in front of audiences spanning hundreds to thousands, Bridgeway have rocked stages at Richelieu Summer Festival, Music City North (Toronto), Cabaret Lion d’Or and supported, “Hold the Fort – Giving Back to Fort Mac, Toronto Style” to name a few. They have opened for Hedley and enjoyed provincial success with their third single, “So Far Away” achieving a listener audience of 17,630,000.

With a growing fan base and a combination of diverse instrumental and songwriting talents, Bridgeway are poised to generate a new musical buzz beyond their beloved Montreal.

Toronto Singer-Songwriter Greg Wyard Premieres “At The End Of The Day” Video from Hugh’s Room CD Release Party

Greg Wyard

Every so often, I have the extra special pleasure of working with a recording artist whose music I personally really love and Greg Wyard is one such artist. The man is a genius. He’s not only a brilliant musician and gifted singer-songwriter, but he’s also very computer savvy.  The audio and video for his self-penned and arranged “At The End Of The Day” was edited, mixed and colour corrected by Greg, which is pretty impressive, but as you’ll see, it’s his music that really speaks for itself. Without further adieu, I invite you to watch the video premiere from Greg’s live performance of  “At The End Of The Day” at the June 2014 CD Release party for his third album, Encore, at Hugh’s Room in Toronto.

Joining Greg that night were Will Hare on piano, Todd Huckabone, Tim Bovaconti and Ed Bernard on guitars, Troy Feener on drums, Nick Wyard on percussion, Anna Atkinson and Brielle Melle on violins, Amanda Penner on viola, Alex McMaster on cello, Paul Tarussov on trombone, Steve Dyte on trumpet and Braxton Hicks on sax.

For those of you who haven’t heard of him yet, Greg Wyard is a singer-songwriter, guitarist and bass player who has been diligently working at his craft since he was ten years old. Greg moved to Canada from his native England at age 13 and settled in Toronto, earning a reputation as one of its most hardworking solo performers. Greg has a music degree from McGill University, and released three original CDs from which his songs “Something I made up” and “What are you trying to prove” both placed in the Standard Radio National songwriting competition. An international performer, he has toured the United States, England, Malta, Australia, Norway and most recently Goa.

Unapologetically melodic in his writing, Greg’s songs can’t escape the influences of the music that shaped him – The Beatles, Crowded House, Squeeze – and he loves to write pop songs that surprise you with an intricate little guitar line here or an unexpected key change there.

As a cover performer, Greg has an encyclopedic knowledge of popular music. Known for Greg Wyard Encorehis faithful reproductions of intricate classic rock songs such as Bohemian Rhapsody and Baba O’Reilly (which you can watch and listen to on YouTube or Soundcloud) using just his voice and guitar, he can play any one of a thousand songs off the top of his head.

Greg released his third CD entitled Encore in 2014 and is currently promoting the CD around Canada and the rest of the world.

If you have an opportunity to see Greg Wyard perform live at any one of the intimate venues that he currently frequents, DO NOT MISS HIM! You will be utterly amazed by his talent and if you have the chance to chat with him, you’ll also discover what a genuine and personable gentlemen he is. Artists like Greg Wyard are responsible for inspiring me to want to pursue a career in the Canadian music industry and to continue to work hard to do my absolute best at promoting them through social media marketing.

Please be sure to leave Greg a comment on YouTube with your thoughts about his new video.

Canadian Songstress Ann Vriend Releases The Next Australian Single From Her Acclaimed Long Player For The People In The Meantime

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NEW SINGLE YOU CAN HAVE ME RELEASED TO RADIO ON FRIDAY 15TH  MAY 2015

Ann Vriend You Can Have Me

Copyright © 2014 Leroy Schulz http://www.leroyschulz.com/2014

Canadian songstress Ann Vriend is following up the success of her recent pop/soul long player For The People In The Mean Time with a catchy soul/funk single You Can Have Me, chosen specifically for release in Australia this May. After a successful tour down under at the start of 2015, it was quickly evident that Ann’s rapidly growing fanbase missed the pint-sized singer- songwriter, so she hand-picked one of her favourite tracks from the album to share with music lovers.

The Vancouver born singer hit her musical strides early when her parents discovered her picking out songs by ear on a toy xylophone at age three. She was enrolled in violin lessons by age four, and by the age of nine she was a composing songs on piano. Inspired to continue a career in the music industry, she entered school talent quests, enrolled in music college and won first place in a songwriting competition, which funded her debut album.

Ann’s sound has been described as an enchanting cross between the ‘girly timbre of Dolly Parton and the blues-filled prowess of Aretha Franklin’. In 2013 she won Canada’s nation-wide ‘She’s The One’ talent search at the Ottawa Bluesfest, and her live show with her band received 4/5 stars in Die Rhineplatz, Germany this past April. Meanwhile Ann’s songs have garnered airplay on both commercial and independent stations alike. Her latest album, For The People In The Mean Time, an energetic retro soul offering received 4/5 stars in Beat Magazine and is currently up for Pop Recording of the Year and Female Artist of the Year in her hometown of Edmonton. It was also nominated at the Toronto Independent Music Awards for Pop Album of the Year.

Track three from the album, the single You Can Have Me is a playful anti-romantic, or a realistic relationship song, says Ann. “I wrote it to be in contrast with the idealistic pop love songs out there,” she says. “But it’s still really upbeat and has a funky dance vibe rather than a sobering one. In fact, the whole album is about realistic expectations in my rough neighbourhood – sad if you read the lyrics, but the music is quite the opposite. It’s an old-school disco party, a really good time, heavy bad-ass beats, groovy basslines – the kind of thing to play on a Saturday night. I think inadvertently my philosophy of soul music came through, which is that people need to dance and sing and let loose – not because they are problem free and without any blues, but in spite of that, as a way of managing.”

Like many of Ann’s lyrical influences – Paul Simon, Leonard Cohen, Dylan – You Can Have Me is both tongue-in-cheek and simultaneously serious in nature: “It is about accepting and/or settling for someone to be with, in contrast to all the pop songs out there about ‘you’re so perfect and so beautiful and sexy 100 per cent of the time’,” she says. “I came up with a couple of characters who, like most people, want a person who fulfills all the things on their Ideal Person List– but instead they are advised maybe they should consider lowering their expectations of meeting all the points on their List– at least within the span of their lifetime– if they want to actually have a relationship with anyone! It may be on the one hand a bit of a cynical thing but I meant it to be more of a ‘hey, nobody’s perfect’, let’s celebrate people for who they really are kind of song.  I mean, none of us are perfect!”

The album For The People In The Mean Time is firmly rooted in R&B, with nearly all its samples and influences coming from funk artists such as Sly Stone and Parliament, Motown artists such as Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield, and soul artists like Ray Charles and Ann’s all-time favorite singer, Aretha Franklin. The background vocals throughout are arranged in 3-part harmonies taken straight from the pages of the Rayelettes and Aretha, with You Can Have Me being no exception.

The original of You Can Have Me was recorded in Ann’s attic in Edmonton on Garageband as a rough demo, and sent to the album’s producer, Tino Zolfo, in Toronto. The demo had only the bare bones of the track: just piano, lead and background vocals, and a Motown type of chord progression. But Tino decided to put a different groove underneath. “Once he was done with it only the pre- chorus and bridge has any chord progression; he made it all about drums and bass,” says Ann. “After that we re-did the vocal and background vocals in Toronto, but in the end Tino liked how my original vocals sounded better, over the original chord progression he had then removed, because they imply this old-school harmony that’s no longer there. So it’s kind of a crazy thing but we kept those original vocals I did on a Sure 58 mic in my attic. I had no intention of that every being a keeper; I didn’t use a proper recording mic at all, but I am excited by how it sounds- it’s got a quirky old-school gritty undertone to it, while still being dance-like and poppy. That’s what Tino was after and I thought it suited the lyrics, and my neighbourhood, and me, perfectly.”

After releasing “You Can Have Me in Australia Ann hopes to return back down under in September 2015. Almost an ‘honorary Australian’, Ann has spent a considerable time touring the country, and considers it her “home away from home.” So when it came to releasing a new single from her album, Australia was one of the first places she decided to share the song.

Ann Vriend’s single You Can Have Me is released to radio on Friday 15th May 2015.

[Toronto ON]
Jon Davis has achieved full lift-off with the launch of his sophomore release –Open Shore – a powerful, 11-track album showcasing a painterly ability to translate human emotion into delicate aural canvasses of light blue steel and shale grey, with splashes of golden hue.

Possessed of a delicate, almost chameleonic voice, you can hear distant similarities in style from James Taylor to Nick Drake, Coldplay’s Chris Martin and Royal Wood, to Lindsey Buckingham. Anyone looking to appreciate this for themselves should earmark Davis’ NXNE showcase on June 13th.

Having endured a traumatic head injury in ’06, Davis found himself hurtling along a path towards recovery – moving past personal hardships to arrive at a destination where obstacles became opportunities.

One of these is most certainly Open Shore, which speaks to this challenging but triumphant journey. A talent in full bloom, Davis colours this disc with a full complement of smart, insightful lyrics across hook-laden melodies, caressing folk and jazz with an indie-seasoned rock edge, leavened with strong elements of fluff-free pop.

Throughout are messages of hope, and the search for endless possibility. You can hear this in the opening track – “Overcome”. Wrapped in a buoyant, James Taylor-esque joie de vivre, it firmly positions Davis as having cleared the shadows by moving into the light.

Davis presents “After The Birds” as a heartfelt paean to balancing needs over our wants. His soft singing voice, reminiscent of the late Kenny Rankin, sets its sparse presentation into motion as a moody, sweeping soundscape before it spins out of control in the vein of “Aladdin Sane”.

Counter this with the timeless poetry of Thomas Moore in  “If All Those Endearing Young Charms” as Davis’ gentle, acoustic guitar-driven approach rekindles Nick Drake – his solemn, weathered vocal hitting home his transformation of Moore’s words depicting the power of love over appearances.

Through Open Shore, Jon Davis challenges how we view our world and what we can do to make it better. It’s an uplifting wake-up call that’s as reassuring as the gentle, forever lapping of the waves, offering us the encouragement we need to get past personal trials by showing us how to – as he does in “The Scarecrow and the Sunflower” – touch the beauty.

“A Canadian who we (and not only James Taylor fans) should keep an eye out for.” ~ www.altcountryforum.nl, The Netherlands

“Stunningly executed… [Open Shore is] an album that deserves to be heard from beginning to end…it would be utterly remiss to sign off without drawing attention to tracks like “Forest in the City”, which hits like a wave, or “Curtain”, which is beautifully constructed, with a hook that may have to be surgically removed.” ~ Leicester Bangs, UK

“Jon Davis’ musical chops and training are of the highest caliber, they have to be to get your foot in the door in this industry. I urge other presenters to get this guy on their stage in any capacity available.” ~ Matt Large, Hello Darlin’ Productions / The Wintergreen Concert Series

“Jon Davis’ warm vocals and understated guitar create an intimate mood that softly envelops the listener. His music is a blend of Folk and Jazz reminiscent of James Taylor and Nilsson yet his sound, purely his own. Jon is by far one of the most talented singer-songwriters to emerge since Van Morrison.” ~ Alex Boicel, BET Jazz / Cayenne Jazz Festival)

“Although it is tempting to compare him to James Taylor  this reviewer thinks that’s just a starting point. Listen to everything Jon puts on the plate and he is very much his “own man”, I loved it and you will too.” ~ Don Howard, Watermark Concerts

“Jon Davis is one of my favorite performers. He is eclectic, passionate, uniquely multi-talented yet vulnerable and unassuming. He delivers with quiet confidence, yet possesses bold and raw passion.” ~ Holly Fleming, The Yellowdoor

Jon Davis – Overcoming Pain by Bianca Marques & Rick Keene

dsc_5185Listening to Jon Davis’ new album Open Shore  is like sinking into a big comfy chair after a long day.

The overall sound washes over a person in a wave of relaxation. As the sinking sensation encases a soul to newer depths – beautiful lyrics toss one deeper into the intricate compositions.

A combination of James Taylor and Kenny Rankin. Jazz through Pop amid haunting yet charming melodies – Jon is a quintessential Canadian songwriter. Instilling truth amid the pain. Instilling a profound instinct into the human condition of despair and sadness. Discovering a happy medium.

There is a motivational vibe that emanates from Jon’s songs.

What inspires the beautiful craftsmanship within each song? His noble response a bit unexpected …

“In my life in general I’ve dealt with mental illness. Often  when I’m writing a song,  I’m trying to overcome these problems –  so that’s a major motivation for me. I want help other people, I know people have problems in their lives and it’s really important for me and for music to go out and help people come to a higher understanding or get over problems,” says Davis.

Jon is a talented guitarist and pianist. He writes best when he’s out on long walks, during this time the melodies or lyrics arrive and are fitted together in a song. His relaxed way of writing is definitely reflected in his music …

Jon Davis remains a humble man.dsc_5156

So humble, he can not get over the fact he received a grant do make an album. A human album from the heart. The CD is titled Open Shore and Davis’ favorite song is ‘After the Birds’.

An intense track, in fact his most intense song he has written …

I like when art gets intense and actually, it can get pretty dark and painful if it’s to bring you to a better place,” says Jon.

In 2006, Jon suffered a traumatic head injury, an injury which unfortunately led to his dismissal in the lead role within a musical production theater. Throughout – Davis kept a positive mindset and focused his attention to writing songs. Something which became a blessing in disguise …

“Being bed–ridden provided me the chance to write songs, something I have always wanted to do,” explains Davis.  “If not for the injury, I would have stayed in theater longer.”

To further an insight into the man’s mind, Jon describes his positive philosophy in one sentence:

“If we can destroy the need to succeed then we can really live in the moment.”

This all began months ago with some people in Stony Plain, Alberta, inviting me to perform a house concert out at their log cabin at the end of January. Other house concerts in the area got added, and then my bass player James Forrest (a.k.a. Agent Many Trees) told me he was going to need to get himself and his car from Vancouver to Toronto this winter, and I got this idea that it would be great to use that opportunity to do some house concerts with him along the way, at least for the prairies portion of his trip.

So, I came up with the name “Little House Concert on the Prairies Tour”, which I was quite proud of.

However, the tour has expanded in both western and eastern directions to include places that simply are not on the prairies. So, the name is not really that accurate anymore. (But humor me, isn’t that still a great name? My parents read me the Laura Ingalls Wilder books when I was a kid. Nostalgia.)

The weather, on the other hand…. let’s just say I came up with this idea when it was unusually balmy (for Edmonton) in November, and the roads were dry. This was also before my own car broke down on the side of the highway last month in – 28 degree weather on the way to a very high paying gig.

It all turned out ok: we were rescued by a person who happened to have a (broken) life support system in his Ford Escort (see my up-side-down video on FB for more details), so, to quote Ma from Little House on the Prairies: “All’s well that ends well” (the life support system was not needed, anyway, by the way).

This time we will not have a life support system on board, but, due to Agent MT’s change of plans, we are going to RENT a car rather than take his OR my “can’t believe it still runs at all” ’96 station wagon, which has caused me enough grief lately! (See recent FB posts).

So have no fear, we shall arrive in prime form across this frozen land, to many a destination, almost all of which are house concerts, and a few of which are on the prairies.

Hope to see you all soon!

Tennessee Waltz

Before I head home Coco, myself, and probably some other Canucks will head from Toronto to Nashville and Memphis to do some showcasing. (What are we showcasing? In theory, some musical talent, but who knows. I expect to be quite under-slept for over a month at this point so anything is possible.)

Anyway, I absolutely can’t wait to see some of the people I met last year in Nashville, and also to attend the Folk Alliance Music Conference in Memphis. I had so much fun last yr at that conference, jammed every nite on the balcony, wrote a song with Agent Beard and others, spent an awful lot of time in the hot tub, and that is also where the idea for the Double Agent Tours began! (Not in the hot tub, but at the conference in general).

Who knows what will happen this time! If Shai is coming can someone please tell him to bring his melodica again!?

Ah, shucks, all this anticipation will mean we’ll probably just end up having quiet conversations about taxes and go to bed early every night. Anyways, here’s the deets:

Warming Up Down Under

After Tennessee I return home to Edmonton for a few days to host Bluebird North and pack my suitcase full of SUMMER clothes. Then I will get on a very long flight and 2 days later arrive in Australia, where I will be touring non stop for 2 months.

Aussies, the VERY WHITE person arriving March will be me. This skin has not seen vitamin D for a VERY LONG TIME. In fact, due to the fact that I’ve been wearing longjohns all month it’s safe to say I have a negative amount of tan, if there is such a thing.

On a more important note: to get a keyboard from one show to the next I will be needing to rent– or as they say in Aus, “hire”– a car, which is going to be expensive– so in case anyone knows someone who could let me rent/hire one in Melbourne, Tassie, Sydney, or Brisbane at a discount rate let me know (I am very good at driving on the right– and by right I mean left– side of the road by now).

Here’s the Aus itinerary:

NYE – Tix Nearly Gone, Get Here. AU Dates Announced

NEWS FROM ANN VRIEND

Second Hand New Year’s: AV, Amber Bissonnette, and James Murdoch Band Play Rumours Album

Tickets are nearly gone folks– can only get them at the Haven Social Club and at Ticketmaster (direct event link below). So, do not delay!

Here’s the info about the gig:

This New Year’s Eve, Thursday, December 31, the James Murdoch Band will be teaming up with Ann Vriend and Amber Bissonnette to perform, in full, the iconic album, “Rumours” by Fleetwood Mac. James will be singing Lindsay Buckingham’s parts, Ann will sing Christine McVie’s parts and play keys, and Amber will sing Stevie Nick’s parts. Add to that the killer instrumentation of the full James Murdoch band: Nathan Carroll on guitar, Scott Gallant (also of the Faunts) on bass, Chris Budnarchuk on drums, and David Aide on organ and additional keys — and you have a pretty awesome line-up of professional well-known Edmonton performers! This idea originated with James Murdoch, who says: “This is not a cheesy tribute band type thing, we simply all love these incredible songs and want to play them. All of them!” In addition to the Rumours album the above line up will also play other covers of the 70s era to complete a full evening of great music. Tickets are $25 advance and $30 at the door, which includes hors d’oeuvres served throughout the evening and a glass of champagne for each guest.

Vancouver – Ottawa Tour (expanded “Little House Concert on the Prairies” Tour)

This all began with some people in Stony Plain inviting me to perform a house concert out at their log cabin in Stony Plain at the end of January (can’t wait!). Other house concerts in the area got added, and then my bass player (a.k.a. Agent Many Trees) told me he was going to need to get himself and his car from Vancouver to Toronto, and I got this idea that it would be great to use that opportunity to do some house concerts with him along the way, at least for the prairies portion of his trip.

So, I came up with the name “Little House Concert on the Prairies Tour”, which I was quite proud of.

However, the tour has expanded in both western and eastern directions to include places that simply are not on the prairies. So, the name is not really that accurate anymore.

But humor me, isn’t that still a great name? My parents read me the Laura Ingalls Wilder books when I was a kid, nostalgia, you know?

The weather, on the other hand…. let’s just say I came up with this idea BEFORE the very cold weather hit here in Edmonton, and before my own car broke down on the side of the highway a couple of weeks ago in – 28 degree weather (which led to some bizarre albeit happy rescue adventures), but which initially brought on a brief moment of panic, as neither myself nor Agent Many Trees were very prepared to sit in a cold car on the side of the highway all nite…. (not to mention we were supposed to be at a show in an hour).

Anyway, here are the “Expanded Little House Concert on the Prairies Tour Dates”. I am really looking forward to this! Please note: Agent Many Trees’ car is much more reliable than the very old AV tour mobile, so I do think we will arrive sans need for rescue– though you never know, I do seem to attract unwanted adventures…

Places we are still looking for shows (in case you feel like being a house concert host!):

Former Spy Ann Vriend Is A Sizzling Chanteuse!

Ann Vriend is a former spy. She had been working incognito for an undisclosed European agency, posing as a freelance journalist, when she met someone who was also a spy but for the other side. Against all odds, they fell in love and thus entered an increasingly complicated game of torn loyalties, dangerous, clandestine passion, and treacherous lies.

It is these experiences which inspired When We Were Spies; the exquisite baroque pop album by former agent Ann Vriend, an impressive collection of 11 moving, catchy pop songs; a richly layered, edgy yet tender declaration of bravery and love in a time of confusion and fear, produced by Juno nominated producer Douglas Romanow.

Before the album was pressed it had pre-sold 800 copies and garnered 4 star national reviews, including in NOW Magazine, A n E Magazine, and others.

Hovering perfectly between the accessibility of mainstream “pop” and a fresh, quirky writing and singing style all her own, ex-spy Vriend has crossed genres such as pop, rock, roots, electronica, cabaret, soul, and even tinges of alt country– all with humor and flare. This continues to allow her commercial radio hits while seamlessly fitting into the solo soft-seat theatre and festival circuit, celebrated by both Indie music fans and accomplished fellow musicians as much as listeners of mainstream radio. Her blend of originality with pop sounds is comparable to innovators such as Kate Bush, Regina Spector, Sarah Slean, and Feist. Her literary, poetic lyrics have likened her to Leonard Cohen and Paul Simon, and her honest voice shows hints of Dolly Parton’s clear, direct heartbreak, and Aretha Franklin’s stunning, exquisite soul.

With years of international performances under her belt Vriend has wowed audiences around the world with her well-known command as a solo performer, while with her accomplished, world class band unleashes a fuller sound with fervent passion.

Ann’s eclectic fan base is testimony to the fact on record and on stage, her talent lies in her ability to encompass the feelings of true music lovers of any sort. Fans from all walks of life agree, “This is one well-kept secret everyone should have access to.” — Pop Matters, March 2008
