Good Bones is the Sophomore Video from Abby Zotz’s Upcoming CD, Local Honey, Releasing Oct. 13, 2018

GoodBonesTitleTile

Canadian singer-songwriter Abby Zotz contemplates the stories an old house could tell in her second video release from her solo recording, Local Honey. Good Bones, another co-write with long-time collaborator and former Two Roads Home partner, Bryan Williston, has a warm folk-country feel and features her live band with videography and direction by Ryan Osman.

“The song was inspired by the home of our friend Marney Simmons, a charming and traditional dwelling in Mulgrave, Nova Scotia that overlooks the Strait of Canso and Cape Breton Island,” Abby explains. “My mother’s family is from Belmont NS, and hers was another fine old place. It was easy to let our imaginations roam through time and create snapshots of lives lived within these walls.”

Ryan’s careful attention to detail and the presence of the band create the deep fondness and humour found in real human connection and add depth to the message of the song: “that we stand alone, but within a larger community, and that our bones, like a home’s, must be lived in and loved if we’re to make any sense of this life.”

Join Abby for her very special album release concert for Local Honey at Kingston Road United Church, 975 Kingston Rd, Toronto, ON M4E 1T1 on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at 7:30 pm. Tickets are available at: https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/3603396

Sills & Smith Band Releases Music Video for They Don’t Come Knocking

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 25, 2016

SILLS & SMITH BAND RELEASE MUSIC VIDEO FOR
THEY DON’T COME KNOCKING

Sills & Smith Echoes in Time

[Ottawa, Canada]  Sills & Smith, led by Ottawa singer-songwriters Jeremy Sills and Frank Smith, has just released a music video for the song They Don’t Come Knocking off their fifth studio album Echoes In Time. The video was produced by musical friend Robin Youlton, who has teamed-up with Sills & Smith for several music videos, including other Echoes In Time tracks We Are Receiving and Slicing Up The Clouds. Watch They Don’t Come Knocking on YouTube now.

Sills & Smith has independently released five studio albums of music that boldly blends and bends elements of folk, alternative rock, progressive rock, with hints of blues and jazz. On the heels of their critically acclaimed album Etched (2014), the band entered the studio for a second time with legendary producer Phillip Victor Bova (Bova Sound) in the summer of 2015 to record Echoes In Time.  The latest album — released in November, 2015 — includes 13 melodic, original songs and 60 minutes of music.

Echoes in Time features a stellar cast of players, with the core group: Frank Smith (words/music, vocals); Jeremy Sills (music, vocals, acoustic guitars, piano, trumpet); Phillip Victor Bova (recording engineer/producer, electric and acoustic bass) and T. Bruce Wittet (drums/percussion). Brilliant supporting musicians include: Kevin Breit – electric guitars and mandolin, Blair Michael Hogan – electric guitars, Roddy Ellias – electric guitar, Jim McDowell – organs, Don Wallace – electric guitars, Tara Holloway – vocals, Linsey Wellman – saxophone.

Grace Smith designed the beautiful, four panel digipak CD edition of the album. Sills & Smith “Echoes In Time” is available on iTunes, Amazon, CD Baby, Bandcamp and in select box stores. The band’s first three critically acclaimed albums of all original material: The Glorious Ache (2013), No Way In, No Way Out (2012) and Uncertain Vista (2011) were recorded and produced by Jonathan Edwards in his studio, Corvidae Music.

Jeremy and Frank have been inspired to continue rehearsing and writing new songs. They have an album’s worth of originals written for the next Sills & Smith recording, expecting to return to the studio in the spring of 2017.

“No matter where Sills & Smith travel on Echoes in Time, though, the duo always hover around that same mid-’70s arena rock era, oftentimes stripping some of the “progressive” out of their brand of prog rock. Overall, Sills & Smith come off as seasoned and focused songwriters and distinguished instrumentalists on Echoes in Time. (Independent) – Get It” – Daniel Sylvester, Exclaim (Jan 10, 2016)

“Do not operate heavy machinery while listening to Echoes in Time, the fifth album from the Canadian duo of vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Jeremy Sills and vocalist Frank Smith. In fact, this mesmerizing album is best heard when you have the time to sit back and let the music — a light blend of folk, prog and rock with hints of jazz and blues — float into your head. Because Echoes in Time takes its time, and that’s not a bad thing. Sills & Smith open the album with “We Are Receiving,” a strolling song that gradually picks up the pace. “The Chalice/The Blade” is one of the duo’s dreamiest and most melodic songs, while a lone saxophone lends the ballad “One Step Behind” a film noir atmosphere… Taken collectively, these songs make Echoes In Time Sills & Smith’s best album yet”  – Michael Popke, Sea of Tranquility (Feb 09, 2016)

“Sills and Smith have made Etched an obvious labour of love, and this effort permeates the entire album.”  –Tristin Norenberg-Goodmanson, Earshot – The National Campus Community Radio Report (Feb 17, 2015)

“This Ottawa band is growing by leaps and bounds with each new song. Living On An Island – Sounds like: A plea.” – Larry Lootsteen, Alan Cross – A Journal of Musical Things (Dec 11, 2013)

Fort McMurray’s Rock Band FREEDOM’S NOTE Launches “THE FIGHT” With An Official Video Release Nationwide

In Grateful Appreciation to Firefighters and First Responders
All Proceeds from “THE FIGHT” benefit The Red Cross Alberta Fires Appeal

Freedom's Note

Fort McMurray residents have begun the difficult journey home weeks after that terrifying day in May when an unprecedented inferno, fueled by unusually hot and dry spring weather, caused them to flee and led to the largest evacuation in Alberta’s history. Amongst those returning June 2nd, were rock band Freedom’s Note, but not until they finished recording their most important body of work to date.

THE FIGHT’, written by Donny Synard and Danny Fewer and performed by Donny Synard (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Danny Fewer (lead guitar, backup vox), Mark Stewart (bass, backup vox) and Trevor Lethbridge (drums),  is an anthem of appreciation to firefighters and first responders that acted with speed and military precision during this devastation. With additional performances by Shane Gaalaas (B’z) and Johnny Gasparic, ‘THE FIGHT’ was recorded, produced, engineered, mixed and mastered by Grammy-nominated Johnny Gasparic at multi-award winning studio, MCC Recording Studio, Calgary.

“We are proud of Donny and Danny writing a fantastic, ‘true experience’ lyric that shall transcend to everybody directly affected by this tragedy and those that watched and felt the emotions for the people’s lives that were so affected,” said Dave Temple of MCC Recording Studio. “Freedom’s Note endured this tragedy, were made to evacuate and like 85,000+ others were homeless. This band lived it, documented it and sang the f* out of it. Johnny and I are honoured to have our studio name on this.”

With video compilation and production by Matthew Jensen of JensenWorks Technology in Kelowna, utmost appreciation and respect for the media and individuals who filmed is acknowledged. The combined visuals are headshaking, heart-wrenching and resonate an underlying sense of hope.

All proceeds from the purchase of ‘THE FIGHT’ will be donated to the Red Cross for the Alberta Fires Appeal. Click here freedomsnote.com/the-fight to purchase.

Fort McMurray Fire Facts:

Population: 125,000; evacuees, more than 88,000. Burned area, 581,695 hectares (1,437,400 acres) as at June 2. Buildings destroyed, 2,400, 665 work camp units. Injuries, 0. Firefighters deployed from Alberta, Ontario and Quebec with international assistance offered from Australia, Israel, Mexico, the Palestinian Authority, Russia, Taiwan and the United States. South Africa sent 301 firefighters at the request of the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre at the end of May. As of June 2nd, $165 million has been raised for Fort McMurray through The Red Cross.

About Freedom’s Note:

Originally from Newfoundland, and currently based in Fort McMurray, Freedom’s Note have opened for Kim Mitchell, Finger Eleven, Trooper, Simple Plan, Mötley Crüe’s Vince Neil, and Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver fame. Responding to the devastation from wildfires that have swept through Fort McMurray, the community of Brooks, AB hosted a fundraising event on May 14th at their Centennial Regional Arena. With overwhelming support from the community, Fort McMurray’s rock band Freedom’s Note, along with other local bands, helped raise over $100,000 in funds and necessity supplies which required three flatbed trucks to transport the donated items to the Canadian Red Cross and distributed to evacuees. Homeless and unsure of what they would return to, Freedom’s Note continue to “work it” in any capacity possible – performing, keeping spirits up, and handing out food items in areas where many evacuated to and creating and recording, ‘THE FIGHT.’

Freedom’s Note will be among some incredible talent performing at The Rivoli on Friday, June 24th with  94.9 The Rock Presents: HOLD THE FORT –

Giving Back to Fort Mac Toronto StyleA Benefit to support The Red Cross Alberta’s Fire Appeal. Find out more here freedomsnote.com/hold-the-fort

Santa Lucia LFR

Vancouver’s Santa Lucia Premiere New Latin Funk Rock Video for “Russellfunk” from Suppressed Anthems

Santa Lucia LFR

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 8, 2016

[Vancouver, BC] Santa Lucia LFR (LFR stands for Latin Funk Rock) may well be Canada’s best kept secret. Like a multi-ethnic gathering of friends, this seven-member, Vancouver-based band has created a sound that evokes the early days of Latin Rock (Santana, War, etc.) while adding their own blend of Funk grooves. Lead by Nicaraguan frontman German Cantillo on vocals and guitar, the band has an addictive combination of Nuyorican Boogaloo, West Coast Funk and ever present Cuban grooves engulfing the stage with monstrous horns and bass, and funky breaks with furious lyrics in English and Spanish.

Santa Lucia LFR have just released a new video for their song “Russellfunk” from their third, full-length 2011 album, Supressed Anthems, which offers a blend of horn-driven music anthems with a social conscience, unique Latin sensibilities with plenty of rock, a shot of salsa, a shed-load of funk, and some high-speed Nicaraguan cumbia, and proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that they can light up any room, even without words. This instrumental jam-fest highlights the musical sparks that ignite and then blaze with layer upon layer of radiant, brilliant musicianship & soul-inspiring skill.  Playful in its nature, but serious in precision, “Russellfunk” puts the rhythmic heart of Santa Lucia LFR out there directly on the dance-floor to party with the people! Watch it on YouTube now.

With a new single on the horizon, Santa Lucia LFR’s line-up of stellar musicians currently includes: Byron Russell on alto sax, Kevin Tang on trombone, Luis Garzon on bass, Jeremy Vint on trumpet, Luis Aulestia on Latin percussion, and Stefan Grabowski on drums. Although they may be misunderstood visionaries, their common cause is to bring attention to a dynamic sound that has never really been on the musical radar of this country. Their objective is simple: Santa Lucia LFR wants you to dance. Just how they go about getting your body moving is a little more complex, but these guys from a mix of backgrounds have found a way to present new and original Latin and funk compositions that both the masses and purists alike can enjoy.

As a result of their great appeal and the versatility of their music, Santa Lucia LFR are welcomed in nearly every kind of festival, including the Vancouver International Jazz Festival, Vancouver Dragon Boat Festival, Salmon Arm Blues & Roots Festival, Victoria Ska Fest, Folk on the Rocks Festival in Yellowknife, to the Taste of Fernie and Okanagan Winery series at Tinhorn Creek. They have also performed corporate shows for the Diabetes Society of Victoria, CBC French Alliance Society and fundraisers for Canadian Veterans at Billy Bishop Legion, as well as the Jazz Cellar Club in Vancouver to rock clubs in Western Canada and the US, opening for international touring acts such as Ozomatli, Yerba Buena, Los Mococos, The Skatalites, Maxi Priest, The Cat Empire, Los Lobos, Polyrythmics and Israel’s Hadag Nahash at the annual Jewish Chutzpah! Festival.German Cantillo of Santa Lucia LFR

British Columbia music fans can catch Santa Lucia LFR on April 30, 2016 at The Royal Canadian Legion Crescent Branch 240 in White Rock, on May 13 at the River City Pub in Revelstoke, and on May 14 at the Salty Street Fest in Salmon Arm. In the meantime, stay in touch with the band at www.santaluciamusic.com and through their social media sites on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Ottawa Duo Sills & Smith Release New Videos in Support of Their Latest Album Echoes in Time

Sills & Smith Echoes in Time

I had the distinct pleasure of working with Ottawa duo Sills & Smith a couple of years ago. Singer-songwriter Frank Smith, who is a helluva nice guy, started making music later in life, at age 47, and together with his songwriting partner Jeremy Sills, has been incredibly prolific ever since, having independently released five studio albums of music since 2011 that boldly blend and bend elements of folk, alternative rock, progressive rock, with hints of blues and jazz. Each one just keeps getting better and better.

The band’s first three critically acclaimed albums of all original material: THE GLORIOUS ACHE (2013), NO WAY IN, NO WAY OUT (2012) and UNCERTAIN VISTA (2011) were recorded and produced by the immensely talented Jonathan Edwards. All are full-length efforts recorded and produced by Edwards in his studio, Corvidae Music.

On the heels of their critically acclaimed album ETCHED (2014), the band entered the studio for a second time with legendary producer Phillip Victor Bova (Bova Sound) in the summer of 2015 to record ECHOES IN TIME, which was released in November of that year. Their latest album features 13 powerful, melodic original songs; the boldest Sills & Smith musical adventure to date.

ECHOES IN TIME features a stellar cast of players, with the core group: Frank Smith (words/music, vocals); Jeremy Sills (music, vocals, acoustic guitars, piano, trumpet); Phillip Victor Bova (recording engineer/producer, electric and acoustic bass) and T. Bruce Wittet (drums/percussion). Brilliant supporting musicians include: Kevin Breit – electric guitars and mandolin, Blair Michael Hogan – electric guitars, Roddy Ellias – electric guitar, Jim McDowell – organs, Don Wallace – electric guitars, Tara Holloway – vocals, Linsey Wellman – saxophone.

Sills & Smith have just released a music video for the track Slicing Up The Clouds”. Check it out on their YouTube channel (or here):

While you’re at it, why not take a look at my personal favourite video for “We Are Receiving” from ECHOES IN TIME.

Both music videos were produced by Robin Youlton with film footage used under license from Shutterstock.com.

ECHOES IN TIME is available for sale now on iTunes, Amazon, Bandcamp and other retailers in digital format and the beautiful digipak CD edition.

For those of you looking for intelligent, mature, alternative rock, turn your ears to Sills & Smith.
