“Energetic and exciting music fest from a band with talent to burn… the very epitome of world music: no boundaries, no rules!” – Maverick Music Magazine

NY Times and BILLBOARD charting band Sultans of String are releasing their new single on October 25, 2019. Entitled The Power of the Land, it features Ojibway Elder Dr. Duke Redbird and Indigenous artists Twin Flames.

Sultans of String are 3x JUNO Award nominees (Canada’s Grammys) and 4x Canadian Folk Music Award winners. They recently celebrated their 10th anniversary as a band, criss-crossing North America and UK, and performing at many taste-making forums such as JUNOFest, Celtic Connections in Glasgow, Birdland in NYC, and California’s hip music scene, including the San Jose Jazz Festival. They have sold out Koerner Hall three times (Toronto’s Carnegie Hall) and performed with Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton Symphony Orchestras. Sultans of String were recently recorded live on BBC TV, Irish National Radio, and internationally syndicated shows including SiriusXM in Washington DC.  At the core of the band’s sound is Chris McKhool’s (Jesse Cook, Pavlo) bold and fiery fiddle, melded seamlessly with founding guitarist Kevin Laliberté’s (Jesse Cook) rumba rhythm- together their musical synergy created Sultans of String’s signature sound – the intimate and playful relationship between violin and guitar. Added to this rich foundation are bass master Drew Birston (Chantal Kreviazuk), guitar wizard Eddie Paton, and Cuban percussion master Rosendo Chendy Leon (Alex Cuba).

This collaborative single The Power of the Land, with lyrics by Duke Redbird and music by Sultans of String band, will be part of a larger upcoming album entitled REFUGE to be released in 2020, featuring incredible talents from the USA/Canada, many of whom arrived as recent immigrants and refugees. We feel it is important to highlight the extraordinary contributions of those that have arrived here from around the globe, as well as global talents that have been ambassadors for peace. Each one of us has a remarkable story to tell, and we are excited to share the beauty of these collaborations with you, featuring special guests from First Nations, Turkey, Somalia, Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, Greece, Syria, Mexico, Portugal, Cuba, and Sudan.

Refuge’s potent and poetic single The Power of the Land features the interwoven vocals of Indigenous spoken-word artist Duke Redbird and married Ottawa folk duo Twin Flames. “I actually heard Duke recite that poem years ago,” McKhool says. “I was so moved that I introduced myself to him after the performance and said, ‘Have you ever thought about putting this to music?'” Fast-forward three years, to the day when McKhool realized he had finally written the right backdrop for Redbird’s stirring words. “It was just one of those beautiful moments where I realized those lyrics might work perfectly.”

This single is co-produced by the multiple award-winning team of bandleader Chris McKhool and John “Beetle” Bailey.  The beds were recorded on First Nations land at the Indigenous-owned Jukasa Studios. Founded by Ohsweken’s, Kenneth Hill & Jerry Montour, Jukasa Studios is a multi-million dollar studio created for world-class and developing artists to make music in surroundings rich in spirit and tradition. The legendary 8072 G Series Vintage Analog Console which spent 12 years of its life in studio 3 at Abbey Road Studios in London England, was purchased and moved to Jukasa Studios in 2009.  Overdubs and mixing were done at The Drive Shed with John “Beetle” Bailey and mastering by Harry Hess at HBomb Mastering.

“It seems that Sultans of String can’t get out of bed at the moment without finding themselves nominated for one award or another. In a word: Magnificent!”

BIO:

3x JUNO nominees and Billboard charting Sultans of String are “an energetic and exciting band with talent to burn!” (Maverick Magazine UK). Thrilling audiences with their genre-hopping passport of Celtic reels, Flamenco, Gypsy-jazz, Arabic and Cuban rhythms, fiery violin dances with kinetic guitar, while funky bass and shimmering sitar lay down unstoppable grooves. Throughout, acoustic strings meet electronic wizardry to create layers and depth of sound.

Since forming 10 years ago, Sultans of String’s music has hit #6 on Billboard’s world music charts, #1 across Canada on Top 10 national radio charts, landed the New York Times Christmas Hits list, and received multiple awards and accolades, including 1st place in the ISC (out of 15,000 entries), 4 Canadian Folk Music Awards, and a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal (for bandleader Chris McKhool). They have also performed/recorded with such luminaries as The ChieftainsAlex CubaSweet Honey in The Rock, and Ruben Blades.

McKhool (ancestral name Makhoul) has an Egyptian-born mother who happened to play piano, teach classical theory, and feed her young son as much Middle Eastern cuisine as she did music lessons. From there, the powerful violinist developed a taste for multi-genre string sounds and found a like-minded crew of all-world enthusiasts. When McKhool first heard founding guitarist Kevin Laliberté’s (Jesse Cook) rumba rhythm, their musical synergy created Sultans of String’s signature sound – the intimate and playful relationship between violin and guitar. From this rich foundation, the dynamic duo grew, featuring such amazing musical friends as in-the-pocket bass master Drew Birston (Chantal Kreviazuk), the jaw-dropping beats of percussionist Alberto Suarez, and sitar master Anwar Khurshid (Oscar winning Life of Pi).

Sultans of String have been criss-crossing North America and UK for the last several years at many taste-making forums such as JUNOfest, NYC’s legendary club Birdland, Boston’s Scullers, and London’s Trafalgar Square. They recently sold out Koerner Hall (Toronto’s Carnegie Hall), and performed with Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton, Stratford, Ontario and Niagara Symphony Orchestras, as well with Kingsfield POPS in Maine and Maryland’s acclaimed Annapolis Symphony. Sultans of String have also been featured on MPBN’s Maine Arts!, and performed live on BBC TV, BBC Radio, Irish National Radio, and the internationally syndicated shows WoodSongs, World Cafe, and on SiriusXM in Washington.

Help Sultans of String Record Their New Christmas Caravan CD!

I have been working with Chris McKhool and 3x Juno-nominated Sultans of String for the past six years and I love these guys, but I have a confession to make. I’d love this group of Canadian musicians if I’d never worked with them. I would still be a super fan because they’re superb musicians at the peak of their craft who blend genres of music like a gourmet chef creates new recipes, and with each album they release, they astonish me with their talent more and more.

Sultans of String is in the studio recording their 6th CD… a world music Christmas Caravan and they’re really excited about and proud of this project! This is a Christmas album but approached from the perspective of a world music band. We would love for you to take a look at the EPK video for this album at:

http://kapipal.com/projects/recording-our-christmas-caravan-cd/

Sultans of String explore diverse genres, from Quebecois fiddle tunes to collaborating with a traditional Turkish string ensemble. They jump from the classic sounds of the Andrews Sisters to a Himalayan sleigh ride to African roots music, Gypsy-jazz, rumba flamenco, and ska, to the grandeur of the symphony.  They made a dream list of their favourite vocal artists to join them, all of whom agreed to join in the fun! This is their most exciting album yet, and the vocal guests infuse a tremendous amount of energy into their music. You’ll have to watch the video to find out who they are!

These independent recording artists have no record company support, so they need to raise money to finish production… but they are not asking for handouts. Rather, they are offering fun incentives to encourage your support – and you can truly become part of this journey with them. You can pre-order the album, get advance concert tickets, even the Executive Producer credit is up for grabs, along with the front row of seats at their banner CD release concert at Toronto’s Isabel Theatre on December 2, 2017!

If you love what you hear, we would be grateful if you’d share this link http://kapipal.com/projects/recording-our-christmas-caravan-cd/ with your friends.

Sultans of String wouldn’t be able to continue to make new music without you.

Thanks for listening!

Ten Years of Music by Sultans of String

[Toronto ON]  For the past 10 years, 2017 JUNO Award nominees and triple CFMA winners Sultans of String have thrilled audiences with their global sonic tapestry of Spanish Flamenco, Arabic folk, Gypsy-jazz, Cuban rhythms, South Asian and East Coast Celtic music, celebrating musical fusion and human creativity with warmth and virtuosity.

They are celebrating this decade of music making with a limited edition vinyl-only release, 10, featuring re-mastered cuts from their 5 CD catalogue,, as well as an unreleased track from their upcoming Christmas Caravan album.

“We all grew up listening to vinyl, everything from Peter Gabriel and Pink Floyd, to the great folk singers”, says bandleader/producer/violinist Chris McKhool. “I took a break for a number of years when CDs were all the rage, but came back to records a few years ago when exposing my daughter to cool music. There is something so special about the ritual of listening to vinyl– the sound, the smell, the feel of it.  Time and space are put on hold, and I lose myself. After making and performing on countless CDs, we can now cross off making a vinyl album from our bucket list!”

Folk Radio UK recently described their music as “an enthralling, adventurous celebration of the power music has to transcend geographical and cultural boundaries, and Sultans of String wield that power with grace, eloquence, and spirit.”  Indeed 10, is more than a global sonic tapestry. It is a musical promise that embraces differences while finding common ground across culture, land, and time.  While the album treks across all kinds of musical terrain, the fertile soil beneath each track is fed by hope unhindered and freedom found.

At the core of the band’s sound is Queen’s Diamond Jubilee recipient Chris McKhool’s fiery fiddle, melded seamlessly with founding guitarist Kevin Laliberté’s (Jesse Cook) rumba rhythm — together their musical synergy created Sultans of String’s signature sound – the intimate and playful relationship between violin and guitar. Added to this rich foundation are core band members bass master Drew Birston (Chantal Kreviazuk), guitar wizard Eddie Paton (ReDuX:RMx), and Cuban percussion master Rosendo Chendy Leon (Alex Cuba). This album features special guest performances by Anwar Khurshid on sitar (Life of Pi, Love Guru), Andrew Collins on Mandolin (Foggy Hogtown Boys), Bassam Bishara on Oud, Ernie Tollar on Bansuri, The Chieftains’ Paddy Moloney on tin whistle, and a Turkish String Collective from Istanbul.

Sultans of String are celebrating their 10th anniversary crisscrossing North America and the UK. They have recently performed at many taste-making forums such as JUNOFest, legendary jazz club Birdland in NYC, and California’s hip music scene, including the San Jose Jazz Festival. They recently sold out Koerner Hall (Toronto’s Carnegie Hall) and performed with Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton, and Maryland’s Annapolis Symphony Orchestras. Sultans of String have performed live on BBC TV, Irish National Radio, and the internationally syndicated shows WoodSongs, World Cafe, and on SiriusXM in Washington DC.

“We are honoured to receive a JUNO nomination for our new album! We could not have made this recording without the support of the whole Canadian roots community, and our special collaboration with Anwar,” states bandleader/violinist Chris McKhool. He adds, “there is something magical about joining world music rhythms that we often play, but with pop sensibilities and forms and lengths, and blending that with the music of the East.”

Yet, Subcontinental Drift is more than a genre-hopping passport. It is a musical promise that embraces differences while finding common ground across culture, land, and time.

“Together we started writing songs about freedom and equality, and our hope of creating a better world. I feel in some way that these songs reflect our own personal hopes and journeys towards finding a world peace. This is a message that is needed more than ever at this time.”

The CFMA win and JUNO nomination come on the heels of the band’s whirlwind North American and UK Subcontinental Drift tours, including a special appearance organized by the High Commission at London’s Trafalgar Square. Distributed by Fontana North in Canada, the album hit #1 in Canada on Earshot’s international charts, top 10 on the American CMJ charts and top 15 on Billboard’s World Music charts in the U.S. It also got picked up for distribution in the U.S. by CEN/SONY and by Proper in Europe.

The band has been on the road non-stop and will make their debut in The Netherlands and mainland Europe this summer. Sultans of String are celebrating their 10th anniversary as a band, crisscrossing North America and performing at many taste-making forums such as JUNOFest, legendary jazz club Birdland in NYC, and California’s hip music scene, including the San Jose Jazz Festival. They recently sold out Koerner Hall (Toronto’s Carnegie Hall) and performed with Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton Symphony Orchestras. Sultans of String were recently filmed by MPBN’s Maine Arts! in a feature concert and performed live on BBC TV, Irish National Radio, and the internationally syndicated shows WoodSongs, World Cafe, and on SiriusXM in Washington.

They are currently recording a festive, world music-inspired Christmas Caravan CD featuring Canada’s singer to the stars Rebecca Campbell (Bruce Cockburn, Alanis Morissette, Emmylou Harris), 5x Platinum selling Nikki Yanofsky, The Chieftains’ very own Paddy Moloney, JUNO winner Alex Cuba, Cameroon’s Richard Bona (Paul Simon, Herbie Hancock), Panamanian 7x Grammy-winning Ruben Blades, and more!

Sultans of String Release DELUXE Subcontinental Drift Sept. 9!

Sultans of String Subcontinental Drift Deluxe version

Today is the day! Sultans of String‘s brand new DELUXE & DIGITAL ONLY version of their album Subcontinental Drift featuring sitar master, Anwar Khurshid, and 5 NEW TRACKS, is available now through Cadence Music, Creative Entertainment Network and Proper Music Distribution as well as on iTunes worldwide at: http://apple.co/2c3ZIp4

“Subcontinental Drift has, in some ways, been the most exciting project of our career so far. Our summer UK tour, including a special Canada Day performance in London’s Trafalgar Square, was a real personal highlight where we got to showcase the new songs as a trio (myself-Chris McKhool on violin, band co-founder Kevin Laliberté on guitar, and our special guest Anwar Khurshid on sitar). That is why when we had the opportunity to share Subcontinental Drift in a Deluxe version, featuring our smaller band configurations, I got really excited about it.

Two of the songs, Enter The Gate and Rakes of Mallow/Rouge River Valley are performed as a trio. There is something real cool about how a trio can have flexibility and pivot on a note – it offers a lot of freedom.

We also shook things up with a remix of Snake Charmer, incorporating some electronica and drum elements that Kevin mixed in.

We included a video edit version of Parchan Shaal Panhwar that is not only shorter but also in a lower key, as shimmering guest vocalist Shweta Subram wanted to try a version with a huskier voice. And finally we included a song that Kevin wrote recently, When We Were Four. He often performs that as a solo piece in our live show, but here it is with some violin added to spice it up.

These new tracks are added to the original ten on our original east-meets-west offering with Anwar Khurshid, Subcontinental Drift. There is something magical about joining world music rhythms that we often play, but with pop sensibilities and forms and lengths, and blending that with the music of the East. Yet, Subcontinental Drift is more than a genre-hopping passport. It is a musical promise that embraces differences while finding common ground across culture, land, and time. Anwar’s become a great musical and personal friend. Together we started writing songs about the freedom and equality we experience living here in Canada, and our hope of creating a better world. I feel in some way that these songs reflect our own personal journeys towards finding a world peace.”
